Why You Should Eat Non GMO Produce

Everyone knows that fruit and vegetables are good for them. They are a great source of healthy vitamins and fiber, and they taste great as well. Humans have been farming and cultivating fruit and vegetables for thousands of years and people with a diet high in fresh produce tend to live longer, healthier lives. It is best to eat locally grown produce that is non GMO. GMO stands for genetically modified organisms. This means that the seeds have been modified in a lab to produce something that is not found in nature. There are no long term studies on these to figure out what effect they will have on the humans that consume them but they have already caused problems in the twenty years that they have been available. GMO crops require more pesticides than regularly grown crops and they have created weeds that are resistant to pesticides. These excess pesticides stay in our bodies and can be dangerous to our health and to pregnant mothers. GMO crops have been linked to allergies and food intolerances in adults and children. The practice of GMO farming also allows companies to create a monopoly on seeds which means that there will be less variety for you to choose from at your farmer’s market, grocery store or wherever you pick up your fresh produce.
