The Best Way to Care for Fresh Produce

All produce is not created equally and neither are the tips for keeping fresh produce fresh. Certain fruits like tomatoes, avocados, melons, apples, mangoes, pears and bananas can be left on the counter and they will continue to ripen. Bananas ripen quite quickly and they can affect the fruit around them so keep them away from your other fruit. Berries must be refrigerated immediately and do not wash them until just before you eat them. Mushrooms should be kept in a paper bag in the fridge and make sure that they are completely dry as any moisture will cause them to rot quickly. Lettuce and leafy greens should be washed and dried when you bring it home so that it is easily accessible when you need it. Store it in an airtight container with a little bit of air trapped inside to make sure it will stay crisp and green as long as possible. For vegetables like radishes, carrots, beets, and other vegetables with tops: remove any elastics or twist ties and cut off the tops leaving an inch to make sure that they don’t dry out. Store them loosely in a bag that allows some air into it. If you store them too tightly in contact with each other they will rot faster. Potatoes, onions, and eggplants should be stored in a cool dry place but not in the fridge as this will spoil their flavor.
